How to make Anzac Biscuits (+ A Simple Recipe to Share With Your Kids)

There’s something truly special about baking with our kids, the laughter, the mess, the sneaky spoon licks, and the warm cookies straight from the oven. And when the recipe holds a piece of our history, it becomes more than just a sweet treat, it becomes a tradition. As Anzac Day approaches, there’s no better time to bake a batch of Anzac biscuits. Originally sent by wives and women’s groups to soldiers fighting in World War I, these golden, crunchy (or chewy, if you prefer!) biscuits were made to last the long journey overseas. Today, they’re baked in remembrance of the ANZAC spirit—courage, endurance, and mateship—and a way for families to connect over stories of resilience and love. This is more than a recipe, it’s a true peice of Aussie history that we can teach, taste and share. Here’s our favourite, kid-friendly Anzac biscuit recipe that tiny hands will love to bake with you. Classic Anzac Biscuits Recipe Ingredients: 1 cup rolled oats 1 cup plain flour 1 cup sugar ¾ cup desiccated coconut 125g butter 2 tablespoons golden syrup ½ teaspoon bicarbonate of soda 1 tablespoon boiling water Instructions: Preheat oven to 160°C and line two baking trays. In a large bowl, mix oats, flour, sugar, and coconut. In a saucepan, melt butter and golden syrup together. Mix bicarb soda with boiling water, then stir into the butter mix (it will foam up). Combine wet and dry ingredients until the mixture holds together. Roll into small balls, place on trays, and flatten slightly. Bake for 10–12 minutes or until golden. Cool on a wire rack (or sneak one warm—they’re irresistible!). Whether you’re teaching your kids about our history, looking for a meaningful afternoon activity, or just love a good biscuit, this one brings hearts and hands together. And hey, if baking feels like one more thing on your never-ending to-do list, we get it.
